The Friends Exercise

This week, I was grateful to see the two new partners with shiny eyes — they did “The Friends Exercise”. This exercise comes from Simon Sinek’s book “Find Your Why”.

The first thing OnSaPa-Partners go through is to find their personal why. At OnSaPa, we consider that as an important task before people build the next project, company, or even writing their personal life vision. I’m using the Friends Exercise to validate the themes I’ve distilled from the important stories of their lives. To draft a specific Why, it’s necessary to add what close friends say. It’s a question we probably never ask our friends, and both partners had some resistance first. They did it anyways with trust in the process and came back to the weekly meeting very uplifted and confident. Both had to tell a lot—and that was amazing.

If you’re interested in this, I recommend reading the book.

What should people say at your funeral?

The next step at OnSaPa is to go from the Statement into one's personal vision. When I asked the funeral question, we had a big laugh after the response. It matched with the Why-Statement one by one—especially because it was a spontaneous joke by the partner.

“Tell me, if you could listen… what should people say at your funeral?”

The response came with a sarcastic tone:

“Finally… he’s gone.”

Now look at this: In the partners Why-Statement, it’s to make life easy and pleasurable for people in a playful way. In the joke, it’s exactly the same. That was a key moment for both of us. We could see that the “Why” is our powerful underlying driver, with jokes, in our work, in our kitchen, and so on.

The next step is on Tuesday

Both partners found their Why. And I’m glad that their why-drafts fit OnSaPa’s vision. Both are driven to contribute to a planet of harmony and progress in their own way. I’m very curious how things will connect.

I can’t wait for Tuesday to see their personal vision. And this is the next step: To define how life should look like. Should it be with kids or without? What kind of impact do they want to make? What are the people they want to connect with? What do they want to create in order to fulfill theirs why? And what do they want to leave on earth, that makes our planet a little bit better than it is right now?

It’s so beautiful to see this development and to be trusted as a guide.
